  • 27 February 2017 - Prof Michael O'Neill will be a Principal Investigator on ALECS (Advanced learning in Evolving Critical Systems). This is an MCSA-COFUND Fellowship Programme funded under H2020 worth 3.68 million Euro. The first cohort of fellowships will start in September 2018.

  • 15th December 2016 - We held the 7th Natural Computing Research & Applications Workshop today with presentations on a range of topics including Social Genetic Programming, Evolution of the Neural Architectures, Functional Benchmarks in GP, Why Don't Plants have Eyes? and Predictive Modelling in Patient Recruitment.
  • 21 January 2016 - Prof Michael O'Neill has received a 2016 Failte Ireland Conference Ambassador Award in recognition for attracting and hosting the ACM GECCO 2011 conference in Dublin, which attracted over 600 delegates from 52 countries.
  • 5 January 2016 - NCRA researchers have been nominated for two best paper awards (EuroGP and EvoApps) at this years EvoStar event. A total of nine papers will be presented by the group at the event held in Porto, Portugal at the end of March.
  • 18 December 2016 - We held the 6th Natural Computing Research & Applications Workshop today with presentations on a range of topics from Genetic Programming for Sports Analytics and Clinical Trial Optimisation to semantics and program traces.

  • 30 April 2014 - Science Foundation Ireland have awarded 1.8Million Euro to Michael for his research project on "Applications of Evolutionary Design". The NCRA are now recruiting a number of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students to start this September. .
  • 27 April 2014 - Just over one month left to submit extended abstracts to the Semantic Methods in Genetic Programming PPSN 2014 Workshop.
  • 23 April 2014 - A number of papers including, "Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming for Financial Data", "Dynamic Index Trading using a Gene Regulatory Network Model", and "Higher Order Functions for Kernel Regression" are being presented at the EvoStar events in Malaga, Spain this week. NCRA researchers are also playing a leading role in the organisation of the event. EuroGP, the European Conference on Genetic Programming is chaired by Miguel Nicolau, EvoMUSART is chaired by James McDermott and EvoFIN is chaired by Alexandros Agapitos.

  • 13 August 2012 - We welcome Dr Miguel Nicolau as a new Research Fellow with FMC2. Earlier this month Dr Jonathan Byrne joined FMC2 as a Research Assistant having successfully completed his PhD earlier this Summer.

  • 1 September 2010 - We welcome new team members Cliodhna Tuite (PhD student on the SFI Financial Mathematics and Computation Cluster) and Erik Hemberg (Post doctorate researcher) who join us today. Erik recently successfully defended his PhD thesis and re-joins our team to spearhead a collaboration with Bell Labs.
  • 18 July 2010 - NCRA research will feature prominently at this weeks IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation. We are organisers of the "Grammars in Natural Computing" track, and most of our team will be in Barcelona presenting our 12 papers (see our Publications page), which includes the latest findings on Semantics for Genetic Programming, Tree-Adjunct Grammatical Evolution, piGrammatical Evolution, Higher-order functions and Search Operators for Design, Modularity and Locality in Genetic Programming and applications in Finance and Games.

  • 14 October 2009 - Science Foundation Ireland announce the creation of the Financial Mathematics & Computation Cluster (FMC2). The cluster has received € 4.1 Million in funding, and is a collaboration between Industry partners, UCD, NUI Maynooth and Dublin City University. Three of the six Principal Investigators are members of UCD's NCRA, namely Anthony Brabazon, Michael O'Neill and David Edelman. The other PI's are Gregory Connor (NUIM), Paolo Guasoni (DCU) and John Cotter (UCD).

  • 24 April 2009 - ICSP is an outreach module for Second Level students delivered by members of the NCRA to promote Computer Science (ICSP 2008). This initiative is critical in the Irish context as there is currently no ICT curriculum for high-school level students and consequently a lack of understanding of what CS is about and the potential careers that exist. Given that this sector of the Knowledge Economy is booming despite a deep recession, there is now a massive shortfall in graduates. ICSP 2009 is now open for applicants.
  • 20 April 2009 - NCRA's latest monograph was published today by Springer. "Foundations in Grammatical Evolution for Dynamic Environments" by Ian, Michael and Tony is the second book to be published on Grammatical Evolution (GE) and describes some of the groups recent research on GE's application to dynamic environments.

  • 1 Sep 2008 - Dr. Michael O'Neill has been awarded a Science Foundation Ireland Principal Investigator award for EDGE (Evolution in Dynamic Environments with Grammatical Evolution). The primary objective of the EDGE project is to analyse and improve the ability of Grammatical Evolution (GE) to find solutions in dynamic environments, facilitating its application to hard real-world dynamic problems. Many of the most challenging problems facing researchers and decision makers are those with a dynamic nature. That is, the environment in which the solution exists, and consequently the optimal solution itself, changes over time.

  • 30 March 2007 - NCRA researchers authored one of only two papers that have been nominated for the Best Paper Award at EvoMUSART 2007 (Evo*), to be held in Valencia, Spain from 11-13 April. The paper is Evolutionary GUIs for Sound Synthesis by James McDermott, Niall Griffith and Michael O'Neill.
