The main method of focus is grammar-based genetic programming algorithms such as Grammatical Evolution (GE), and the headline application is designing software-defined, autonomic networks for wireless communications in collaboration with Bell Labs. The project is funded under an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfi.ie\/\">SFI<\/a>\u00a0Principal Investigator award (13\/IA\/1850).<\/p>\n<p>App&#8217;ED project highlights to date include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over 80<strong>\u00a0publications<\/strong> have arisen from the App&#8217;ED project research, including 2 books, \u00a0over 20 journal articles, over 50 peer-reviewed conference papers, and a special issue of the Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines Journal have been published arising from App&#8217;ED research. Sample list provided below.<\/li>\n<li>A collaboration with\u00a0<b>Bell Labs<\/b>\u00a0has resulted in peer-reviewed publications (4 journal articles, numerous conference papers &#8211; further details below) with best paper nominations at EuroGP 2016 and EuroGP 2018, and a global Patent Application in 2018 for Methods and Systems for Network Self-Optimization using Deep Learning.<\/li>\n<li>A collaboration with\u00a0<b>ESB Networks<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ve published 2 new books\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/gp\/book\/9783662436301\"><i>Natural Computing Algorithms<\/i><\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springer.com\/gp\/book\/9783319787169\">Handbook of Grammatical Evolution<\/a> with Springer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Training of 3 PhD students<\/strong> (Stefan Forstenlechner, David Lynch &amp; Nam Le Hai), and employment of <strong>4 post doctoral researchers<\/strong> (Dr Takfarinas Saber, Dr David Fagan, Dr Michael Fenton &amp; Dr R\u00f3is\u00edn Loughran).<\/li>\n<li>A series of <strong>Education and Public Engagement activities<\/strong> have taken place including:\n<ul>\n<li>O&#8217;Neill was interviewed for three articles (on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/special-reports\/artificial-intelligence\/will-artificial-intelligence-take-over-the-world-1.4095345\">What is AI?<\/a>, \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/special-reports\/artificial-intelligence\/can-ai-be-creative-1.4095660\">Can AI be\u00a0creative?<\/a>, and AI in Sport) as part of an Irish Times Special Report on Artificial Intelligence.<\/li>\n<li>With the Analytics Institute Prof O&#8217;Neill conducted the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalanalyticsconference.ie\/resources\/Analytics-Institute-Survery-Report-2018.pdf\">survey of Business Analytics activity<\/a> in Ireland, which was launched at the National Analytics Conference in the Mansion House, Dublin in November 2018.<\/li>\n<li>O&#8217;Neill was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=srwZ3lOPVw8\">interviewed<\/a>\u00a0for the UCD Business Faculty Insights Series (November 2015).<\/li>\n<li>O&#8217;Neill was interviewed for an Irish Times special report on\u00a0&#8220;Managing Big Data&#8221; (24 July 2015).<\/li>\n<li>O&#8217;Neill was interviewed on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sponsored\/winning-through-sophisticated-data-analytics-1.1967678\">Winning Through Sophisticated Analytics<\/a>\u00a0for the Irish Times (20 October 2014).<\/li>\n<li>O&#8217;Neill appeared in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=bDi701RgbsQ\">UCD Faces of Research<\/a>\u00a0video series (Sep 2014).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Awards<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>We won the <strong>Gold<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>HUMIES Award<\/em><\/strong> for Human Competitive Artificial Intelligence at the ACM GECCO Conference in Prague in July 2019.<\/li>\n<li>We won the <strong>Bronze<\/strong> <strong><em>HUMIES Award<\/em><\/strong> for Human Competitive Artificial Intelligence at the ACM GECCO Conference in Berlin in July 2017.<\/li>\n<li>In early 2016 we won the <strong><em>Failte Ireland Conference Ambassador Award<\/em><\/strong> in recognition for hosting the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigevo.org\/gecco-2011\/\">ACM Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference GECCO 2011<\/a>\u00a0in Dublin, Ireland 12-16 July 2011, which attracted approximately 600 delegates from 52 countries with an acceptance rate of 38%. A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gecco2011.blogspot.com\/\">photo diary<\/a>\u00a0is available.
